How to remove a background from an image
You do not need a desktop editor for a clean cutout. A browser PNG background remover is enough for portraits, product shots, and profile photos — if you keep the file on the device and download a real PNG.
Steps that actually produce a file
- 1
Open the free background remover
Go to the PixTools background remover. You do not need an account.
- 2
Upload the photo
Drop a JPEG, PNG, or WebP, or use the sample image to see the flow.
- 3
Remove the background
Run the on-device model. The first visit downloads a public model into the browser cache; the photo stays on your device.
- 4
Download the transparent PNG
Preview on the checkerboard, then save. Crop or enlarge next if you need a profile cutout or a larger file.
When this is the right tool
It works best when the subject is clear against the backdrop: a person, a product, a pet. Hair and glass can leave a halo. That is a limit of an on-device model, not a hidden upsell. If you need hair-perfect studio retouching, a dedicated editor still wins.
After the cutout, use the image cropper for a circle avatar, or the image upscaler if you only need a larger PNG (Lanczos + sharpen, not generative AI).
Privacy
Removing the background happens in your browser. PixTools does not receive the photo. The first run may fetch a public model file; that is not your image leaving the machine.
